Trail Overview

This trail climbs over 700 feet and drops almost 700 feet in just under 5 miles, starting just north of the Bull Creek OHV parking lot within the Stanislaus National Forest. The single vehicle-wide trail consists of sand, dirt, and rocks, creating very dusty conditions throughout the journey. The route features consistent technical challenges, including ruts, off-camber sections, and bumpy terrain that demand constant attention and vehicle control. Part of the trail follows a shelf road configuration, adding exposure elements to the technical driving. At the half-mile point, conditions deteriorate significantly as the trail becomes rockier and more uneven with numerous holes that create jarring impacts and clearance challenges. Ruts continue to appear throughout the accessible portion of the trail, with none exceeding 18 inches in depth, but creating ongoing obstacles for navigation. Low-hanging branches present additional hazards that may contact taller vehicles, requiring awareness of overhead clearance. Unfortunately, just after mile 1, the trail ends abruptly due to many downed trees blocking the route for at least a quarter mile, making further progress impossible. A couple of small spots provide barely adequate space for single-car turnarounds, though maneuvering is challenging. The final section that climbs up to the right should be avoided due to the difficult turnaround situation and blocked passage ahead. Spur trail, Forest Service Road 2S59, offers an alternative exploration option for those seeking additional adventure.

Difficulty

This trail receives a difficulty rating of 3, indicating easy conditions, though high clearance vehicles are recommended due to the technical nature of the terrain. The combination of single vehicle width, ruts up to 18 inches deep, off-camber sections, rocky and uneven surface with holes, shelf road exposure, low-hanging branches requiring overhead clearance, and the blocked passage requiring difficult turnarounds creates substantial challenges despite the easy rating classification.
