Dog Creek Valley

This rugged 6-mile trail drops about 700 feet before climbing nearly 1,600 feet, offering a dynamic ride through the historic Gold Rush area called Dog Town. It begins off Dunderberg Mill Road, traveling below Dunderberg Mill Road. The trail is mostly sandy and about a vehicle and a half wide, lined with sharp desert brush. As you descend from the Dunderberg Mill side, expect ruts caused by water runoff, followed by a climb into a small valley with Dog Creek shaded by dense bushes and trees. A short water crossing can be present. It is typically shallow in early September, but conditions vary with the season, so always check depth and current before attempting. Around Mile 2.5, the trail surface transitions to sand mixed with embedded rocks, creating a bumpy ride. From there, it climbs out of the valley and rewards drivers with sweeping views of the Eastern Sierra and the Bodie Mountain range.
