Trail Overview

This trail is easy to complete in almost any vehicle. Along the way you'll encounter the Darwin Falls trailhead, various side trails, and some interesting abandoned structures. There are some spots with loose sand and a few off-camber areas, but with a bit of skill and caution, this trail is an easy and scenic alternative route to enter Death Valley National Park. The trail meanders through a canyon that runs between Darwin, CA to Panamint Springs. It is part of the 35.5 Eichbaum Toll Road (completed in 1926).

Difficulty

95% of the trail is incredibly easy. However, there is one small section where the route gets a little rocky and you will encounter some off-camber sections as well as some small drop-offs.

History

Today Darwin CA is nearly a ghost town with a population of roughly 50 inhabitants, dwelling among a former mining community. In 1874 early Darwin prospectors discovered silver which led to a boom. The nearby boom in the Panamint area attracted slightly more attention, but Darwin's population soared to nearly 700 residents at the time. By 1877 production slowed and much of Darwin's population moved on to more prosperous areas. Mining surged once again in the years between the first and second world wars. But, miners in this era were more interested in Darwin's Zinc and Lead ores. Mining continued into the 70's.

The trail segment between Panamint Springs and Darwin Falls Trailhead is closed. The road is washed out and the only way to physically pass is through the canyon bed, which may or may not be allowed. The segment between Darwin and the trailhead is very narrow and steep in parts, probably should be rated 3 or 4 and definitely not a 1.

Took trail from Darwin, once you get to the parking lot for the falls the road is completely washed out. Hiker informed me the road was closed from the panamint side. There is a sign on 190 stating that the road is closed . No further info .

Did the trail starting from 190. You can see where a road used to be but it is completely washed out. You have to follow through the wash to continue and there are some more technical sections where you navigate off camber or narrow terrain on or near ledges. This trail is definitely not a 1/10 but is also not a 7/10 for crawlers only. Our group was 3 overland rigs and we made it through just fine. I would say its a 4, maybe 5/10 for an inexperienced offroad driver. You'll want high clearance. Be sure to take the spur road to the north that leads back to the edge of the park to see the goldfish in the natural spring.

Definitely not "any vehicle" any more. I started in Darwin. The trail was fine up to the pass that was about a mile out of town. It was on the eastern slope on the way down where it was very washed out and probably impassable for anything but crawlers. This should probably be more like a 7/10. One side of the one lane road was eroded about 2' below the old asphalt and it was too rocky to straddle the erosion. I turned around and went back out to 190 to Panamint Springs. There, you can see where the Old Toll Road was also washed out and people were using the riverbed to get to the old toll road. There were a couple of Toyota crawlers parked at that end. This is definitely their kind of trail, now. At the Death Valley Furnace Creek Visitors Center, this road is marked as "closed" on their road report screen.
