Trail Overview
Accessed directly from the lower section of the ridge, the Upper Claycroft Ridge off-highway vehicle trail offers a rugged and heavily overgrown journey that quickly leaves traditional forest roads behind. As you venture deeper into the woods, the route devolves from a standard path into a tight, winding singletrack lined with encroaching brush and towering pines. The environment is remote, leading you through quiet, shaded tree tunnels and occasionally opening up into stunning, sunlit meadows bursting with vibrant wildflowers. The surface primarily consists of a soft forest floor blanketed in pine needles and loose dirt, but it frequently gives way to intense, sustained climbs. You will navigate around fallen trees resting precariously along the shoulders and push through dense, leafy foliage that crowds the narrow corridor. While the thick canopy restricts visibility for much of the ride, the trail eventually rewards you with an open viewpoint looking across distant mountain ridges. Because the width is so heavily restricted, it is only suitable for smaller-footprint machines and is completely impassable for standard-sized passenger vehicles.
Difficulty
The trail is exceptionally narrow, and features intense, demanding climbs over rutted, loose rock sections that severely compromise traction. Navigating this path requires excellent ground clearance to safely overcome the jagged, embedded stones and the large, downed logs creating pinch points along the margins. The intense combination of shifting scree, sharp inclines, and narrow trail makes this an advanced, high-clearance challenge where momentum and precise line choice are critical to avoid getting permanently stuck or sustaining severe body damage.
