Trail Overview

Casa Diablo Road is a twenty-one-mile dirt road that connects Benton Crossing Road to the Bishop Area. It starts at 7414 feet and drops down over 3000 feet to 4170 feet. The first part, off Benton Crossing Rd, winds through pine forest and high desert. The mostly sandy track is sometimes graded. Patches of rocks and uneven surfaces can pop up, so be cautious of speed. There are stunning views of the Eastern Sierra Mountains, the White Mountains, and Casa Diablo Mountain. As the grade drops into the Bishop area, the road is much less maintained and is heavily washboarded. There are a few short rocky areas.

Difficulty

The North side, closer to Benton Crossing Road, is mostly sandy. But there can be some ruts and rocks that can come out of nowhere. The road becomes heavily washboarded with occasional rock sections as the grade lowers into the Bishop basin.

History

Casa Diablo Road is a historic route that served as a stage stop and vital relay station for supplies and equipment en route to mining camps, and now crosses the Volcanic Tablelands, offering desert camping, petroglyph sites, and climbing opportunities.
