Trail Overview
Calf Creek (FS 25S16) departs from Portuguese Meadow and climbs near Black Mountain Saddle at 6,250 feet in elevation. It is a 8.5 miles of out-and-back travel through dense pine forest. The trail is lined with numerous old, dead trees that have been pushed to the sides of the road, requiring occasional maneuvering. After 1.5 miles, the trail narrows to a tighter single vehicle width that demands more careful driving. Stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys open up along the higher sections of the route. The trail can be very dusty under dry conditions. A large downed tree is present just before the end of the trail. A single turnaround spot exists at the last corner before the terminus. Trailers would have a very hard time navigating this section and are not recommended on this trail.
Difficulty
Small ruts under 12 inches appear throughout, and occasional branches require rolling over along the route. The narrowing trail after 1.5 miles adds commitment to the back half of the route. The downed tree and tight turnaround near the terminus are the most technically demanding moments on the trail. Dusty conditions reduce visibility when other vehicles are present, and sharing the road is encouraged. Trailers are not recommended given the narrow width and tight turnaround.
