Trail Overview

Burro Schmidt Alternative (BLM EP103) is a challenging route featuring various steep hills on sand and rock surfaces with stunning views from the top. Limited sight distance throughout the trail requires heightened awareness of oncoming traffic, and a 4x4 with high clearance is highly recommended. Four low is strongly advised as well. This trail is an alternative to get you to the tunnel, but it is much more challenging. It is also not a smart option if your group size is large due to the limited sight distance.

Difficulty

This trail presents serious challenges, including steep, sandy, and rocky hill climbs that demand low-range capability and several sections with ruts up to 24 inches deep. This is not a route for stock or two-wheel drive vehicles. There is also limited sight distance around some corners and hills.
