Trail Overview
This 6-mile out-and-back trail navigates hard-packed sand surrounded by dark rocks with very little vegetation dotting the barren landscape. Quartz Peak rises in the distance, crowned with communication equipment atop its summit, serving as your navigation beacon. The route eventually leaves the plateau and drops into a wash filled with lots of vegetation, creating a stark contrast to the rocky plateau above. After briefly traveling the wash, it climbs out the other side onto another plateau mirroring the first with hard pack sand and rocks. This pattern repeats, moving from plateau to plateau, crossing washes while heading toward Quartz Peak, creating a rhythmic up and down journey through varied terrain.
Difficulty
Your biggest challenges arrive crossing the washes where lots of ruts and slight drop-offs under 12 inches make for a bumpy ride. The plateau surfaces handle smoothly with hard pack sand and rocks, providing good traction. The repeated wash crossings accumulate bumps over 6 miles, but nothing exceeds 12 inches. High clearance helps with the ruts and drop-offs. The transitions between plateau and wash create elevation changes that demand momentum management but aren't technically difficult.
