Trail Overview
Stretching from Highway 78 to BLM 619, this grainy sand and gravel route carves through open desert flanked by large trees, desert bushes, and seasonal blooming wildflowers. You're traveling through the Imperial Sand Dune Recreation Area, a limited-use zone, so stick to established paths. Vista Mines Road intersects with many other trails, creating a web of options. Numerous runoff washes slice across your path, though none drop more than 12 inches. The Chocolate Mountains rise to the north while the Imperial Sand Dunes dominate the western skyline, giving you striking scenery in both directions.
Difficulty
The grainy sand and gravel surface handles well with decent traction. Those many runoff wash crossings stay civilized at under 12 inches, making them straightforward for vehicles with adequate clearance. High clearance is recommended rather than required, but you'll appreciate having it for the wash crossings and uneven desert terrain. The open nature and decent width make navigation comfortable despite the crossings.
