Trail Overview

This is an out-and-back trail. This sandy trail starts just off Gas Dome Trail and used to connect to Campbell's Wash, though it no longer completes that connection. The route cuts across an open meadow of sand sparsely covered with creosote bushes and pebbles, creating a minimalist landscape. You'll enjoy nice views of the mountains surrounding you and some mud hills in the distance, providing scenic backdrops. There are a couple of small drop-offs all under 12 inches, including one drop into a small wash that adds minor vertical challenges. There are areas for dispersed camping along the way. Despite the open terrain, there is decent cell service available. The trail completely disappears after a mile in a small sand dune area where it no longer drops into Campbell Wash, so be prepared to turn around. This is in the Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Open Riding Area, the largest in California, where registered OHV and highway legal vehicles are allowed.

Difficulty

This is an easy trail with straightforward sandy terrain across the open meadow, but it gets much harder in the sand dune area, which is not smooth with lots of uneven hills. The couple of small drop-offs under 12 inches are minor obstacles that don't require advanced skills. The trail disappearing in the sand dune area after a mile means navigation ends naturally, and you'll need to retrace your route. The sandy surface may benefit from airing down for better traction.
