Trail Overview
BLM 0M6602 branches from Fern Road and climbs into the surrounding hills over fine, loose sand and dirt that can become more difficult when wet. The trail is narrow with some overgrown vegetation and little room for passing. Frequent rock gardens contain 2–6 inch rocks. Around 0.6 miles, the route becomes very narrow and cliffside with considerable loose rock. Camping is plentiful throughout, with level sites offering views of the canyon, hillsides, and surrounding mountains. Around 0.7 miles, a cliffside campsite on the right accommodates up to three vehicles and overlooks the canyon. The trail ends at a scenic, level campsite with room for approximately six vehicles and expansive views across Sawtooth Canyon and the surrounding desert
Difficulty
This trail is rated Level 3 because of the loose surface, frequent rock gardens, elevation changes, and narrow cliffside sections. Careful driving is required where loose rock and exposure make the trail more challenging.
History
The BLM lands around Sawtooth Canyon reflect the long history of California’s Mojave Desert, where Indigenous peoples traveled and lived for thousands of years before miners, ranchers, and settlers arrived in the 1800s. The surrounding desert also contains remnants of the region’s mining and homesteading era, while its rugged volcanic rock formations preserve a much older geologic history.
