Trail Overview
This loose-dirt trail begins with a 24-inch wash that must be climbed immediately, making 4WD or AWD highly recommended. Ruts reach 6–8 inches deep, with frequent rock gardens scattered across the sandy terrain containing rocks from 1–7 inches in diameter. Several sections reach approximately 10° off-camber, and the loose surface can become considerably more difficult when wet. The route travels through a scenic section of BLM land, with mountains and hills on one side and impressive rock formations and canyons on the other. Numerous level campsites are available throughout the route, many with fire rings and enough space for approximately six to eight vehicles.
Difficulty
This trail is rated Level 2 because of the 24-inch wash, 6–8-inch ruts, frequent rock gardens, and sections reaching 10° off-camber. 4WD or AWD is highly recommended, particularly for the initial wash and loose terrain.
History
The BLM lands around Sawtooth Canyon reflect the long history of California’s Mojave Desert, where Indigenous peoples traveled and lived for thousands of years before miners, ranchers, and settlers arrived in the 1800s. The surrounding desert also contains remnants of the region’s mining and homesteading era, while its rugged volcanic rock formations preserve a much older geologic history.
