Trail Overview
This narrow, fine-dirt trail climbs Black Point Hill with steady elevation gain and expansive views of Mono Lake and the surrounding mountains. Posted signage warns of steep, rocky, and rough terrain. Overgrown vegetation makes pinstriping likely, while several small, level campsites along the route accommodate one vehicle and offer excellent lake views. Around 1.3 miles, the trail reaches its most difficult obstacle: a rough hill climb with ruts reaching 2–3 feet deep. This section requires at least 16 inches of front-end clearance, 4WD or AWD, good tires, and careful line selection. Differential lockers are recommended if available. The route eventually reaches a closure preventing further motorized travel, with an impressive viewpoint overlooking Mono Lake and the surrounding mountains.
Difficulty
This trail is rated Level 5 because of the steep hill climb and extremely deep 2–3 foot ruts. At least 16 inches of front-end clearance and 4WD or AWD are required, with differential lockers recommended for the most difficult section.
