Trail Overview

This 2.5-mile trail leaves the valley floor and heads up the Black Canyon where it rises over 1,250 feet. The dirt road quickly turns into a very rocky path. The first real obstacle is crossing a long rocky wash. High clearance is recommended from this point forward. The rock walls surrounding the canyon start to rise. On the last mile, you drop into a very rocky area. The trail can be off-camber in many sections. The trail "ends" as it becomes very narrow and only accessible by very high-clearance specialized 4x4 vehicles. The views of the Eastern Sierra going back down the grade are stunning.

Difficulty

The trail gets more rocky, off-camber, and difficult as you go up the grade. The rocks appear to be less sharp and more rounded. High clearance 4x4 is highly recommended. Those looking for a challenge and who have the appropriate rig may be able to continue up the grade.

Most of the Black Canyon spur is fairly easy, with a few larger ruts and obstacles that might be challenging for non-4x4 vehicles. Once you get up about 2.5 miles, there is a pretty challenging "rock garden" through a narrow canyon. The Jeep LP did pretty well, but the Lexus GX 550 had a little trouble because of its lower approach angle. It made it through though! Once through the tuff stuff, it looks like the trail continues, but we turned around and went home.
