Trail Overview
Aftershock is an extreme rock crawling trail in the world-renowned Johnson Valley OHV area designed specifically for highly built rigs and experienced drivers seeking a true technical challenge. This legendary route stands out as a premier test of machine and driver, requiring a capable four-wheel-drive vehicle equipped with front and rear locking differentials, heavy-duty body armor, and tires at least 37 inches or larger. As a signature canyon route featured in the annual King of the Hammers off-road race, the trail demands precise tire placement and clear communication between the driver and spotter to navigate the massive, tire-grabbing boulders.
While the lower sections of the canyon offer a steady but manageable crawl, the difficulty escalates dramatically toward the top where drivers encounter the trail's notorious signature obstacle. A highly off-camber bypass is available here, though its unstable angle requires an extremely low center of gravity and causes even professional racers and built SxSs to proceed with extreme caution. Utilizing a winch is often necessary to safely conquer the main line's steep, vertical rock faces, making functional recovery gear and reliable winch points essential. The ideal time to tackle this sun-exposed desert trail is during the cooler fall, winter, and spring months, making sure to avoid the extreme heat of the summer season.
