Trail Overview
This narrow, fine-dirt trail follows the edge of dense forest with expansive views of Grant Lake and the surrounding mountains. Overgrown vegetation is common, and wider vehicles may experience pinstriping. Camping is plentiful, with around 10 level campsites offering excellent lake and mountain views. The first 0.8 miles are van and trailer friendly, with several campsites large enough for fifth wheels. Beyond 0.8 miles, vegetation becomes significantly heavier, making the trail unsuitable for trailers and increasing the likelihood of scratches and pinstriping. The final campsite is secluded, accommodates one vehicle, and offers excellent views of Grant Lake and the mountains.
History
Inyo National Forest was established in 1907 and today protects a vast section of the Eastern Sierra surrounding Mammoth Lakes. The area has a long history of Native American use, mining, ranching, and recreation, while its dramatic landscape was shaped by volcanic activity, glaciers, and the uplift of the Sierra Nevada.
