Trail Overview

Pond Creek West Side Route offers a scenic, low-difficulty drive through the lush bottomland hardwood forests of the Pond Creek National Wildlife Refuge, making it an excellent option for families, scenic drivers, and outdoor recreationists. Starting just south of Horatio on Bruce Street, this route utilizes maintained gravel roads that wind south toward the Little River. Along the way, travelers will experience flat terrain surrounded by dense woodlands, with outstanding opportunities for wildlife viewing, bird watching, and seasonal hunting access. The route terminates at a dirt boat launch ramp along the river, providing convenient access for kayakers, anglers, and boaters looking to explore the local waterways. While the route is generally passable for standard passenger vehicles and high-clearance crossovers in dry conditions, wet weather can quickly turn the maintained gravel sloppy and make the final dirt boat ramp section quite muddy. Four-wheel-drive vehicles, high-clearance trucks, and SxSs will find the trek effortless, though caution should be exercised after heavy rains when water levels on the adjacent Little River rise. A public use permit is strictly required to access the refuge and can be acquired online or directly at the refuge entry gate. Visitors must practice pack-in, pack-out ethics to keep this pristine riparian habitat clean and preserved for future recreation.
