Trail Overview

This route begins at Woods Mountain Road and winds through a scenic section of the Ozark National Forest before ending at Murray Creek. The first portion follows a well-maintained gravel Forest Service road through dense hardwood forest before gradually becoming narrower and more rugged. As the route progresses, exposed rock, off-camber terrain, and shallow erosion become more frequent. The drive finishes at Murray Creek, a peaceful location that serves as an excellent place to stop, relax, enjoy lunch, or spend the night at one of the nearby dispersed camping areas.

Difficulty

Although the first half of the route is relatively straightforward, the lower section introduces several technical obstacles that increase the overall difficulty. Drivers must negotiate off-camber terrain, uneven rock ledges approaching one foot in height, and slick rock surfaces created by natural groundwater seepage. Vehicle placement becomes increasingly important through the rocky sections, particularly for longer wheelbase vehicles with limited breakover clearance. Experienced drivers in high-clearance 4x4s should have little difficulty.

History

The Ozark National Forest was established in 1908 and today forms part of the Ozark-St. Francis National Forests, protecting more than one million acres across northern Arkansas. Many of the Forest Service roads traveled today began as logging, fire access, or resource management roads before becoming part of the modern recreation network. Forest management continues to play an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems through timber management, prescribed fire, wildlife habitat restoration, and watershed protection. The rugged Boston Mountains and surrounding Ozark Highlands remain one of the oldest and most geologically significant mountain regions in North America, offering visitors a unique combination of natural beauty and rich forest history.
