Trail Overview

This route travels through a mixture of mature pine and hardwood forest on a surface that varies from maintained gravel to compacted native dirt and rocky two-track. Some sections are relatively broad and well covered with gravel, while others narrow considerably and have grass growing between the tire tracks. The surrounding vegetation includes tall pines, mature hardwoods, younger pine growth, shrubs, grasses, and dense understory, with fallen leaves and pine needles covering portions of the roadway. The route is generally one vehicle wide, although there are occasional wider areas where vehicles can pull aside to allow another vehicle to pass. Several low areas and depressions along the roadway can collect standing water and may remain wet longer following recent rainfall. Wildlife may frequently cross the roadway, and fallen trees or branches are also possible in the more heavily wooded sections.

Difficulty

Typical dips, ruts, potholes, and loose rock create minor uneven terrain along the route. Some dips and ruts may hold standing water longer after recent rainfall, potentially creating muddy or softer conditions.

History

The Mount Magazine area has a long history of transportation, forestry and recreation. During the Great Depression, federal programs including the Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration developed roads and recreation infrastructure around the mountain. Cove Lake was constructed as part of the Mount Magazine land-use project and was completed in 1938, while CCC crews based at nearby Blue Mountain performed forestry work and improved roads throughout the area. Many of today's routes travel through the same national forest landscape that was extensively managed and developed during this period.
