Trail Overview

This trail is divided into two contrasting sections. The first half is a smooth and well-maintained gravel road with numerous side tracks that may lead to dispersed campsites, making for an easy and enjoyable drive. Around the midpoint, travelers will notice a tall tree set back from the trail with flashing wrapped around its base to protect the nest of the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker from snakes. In this area, there is also a gate that may be open, as it was in April. Beyond the gate, the trail becomes significantly more challenging. The second half is narrow and overgrown, with deep muddy holes, off-camber stretches, and dense vegetation that can cause pin stripping and branch damage. A large fallen tree lies across this part of the trail, with a bypass worn into the terrain by local hunters, who appear to be the main users of this section. A compact and capable four-wheel-drive vehicle is strongly recommended for navigating the rougher terrain. Although a few dispersed campsites can be found, the trail lacks facilities such as trash disposal and water supply, and cell service is limited throughout.
