Trail Overview
Fourche Mountain Outer Loop is a versatile backcountry route suited for riders looking for a longer, scenic loop with a mix of easy cruising and occasional moderate challenges. Set within the Fourche Mountain Trail System in the Ouachita National Forest, this trail follows a native surface of packed dirt, forest soil, and intermittent rocky stretches as it winds through dense timber and along the mountain’s contours. While not officially rated, the terrain generally falls into the easy to moderate range, with gentle elevation changes punctuated by short climbs, uneven sections, and areas that can become more technical depending on moisture and trail wear. The route’s legacy as part of the former Mill Creek Equestrian Trail is still evident in its layout, offering a steady, flowing ride rather than sustained technical obstacles.
This is a shared-use trail open to motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs, horseback riders, hikers, and mountain bikers, so riders should expect mixed traffic and ride with awareness, especially in tighter or lower-visibility sections. Stream crossings are a defining feature and can vary from shallow and straightforward to more involved after rainfall, when water levels rise and approaches become slick or rutted. The loop covers enough distance and elevation variation to fill a half-day ride, with its remote setting and minimal development reinforcing the need for navigation awareness and preparedness. Seasonal conditions play a major role in difficulty, as rain can quickly change traction and increase erosion, particularly in shaded or low-lying segments.
