Trail Overview

This through route travels through a mixture of mature pine and hardwood forest, with grasses, shrubs, young pines, and other understory vegetation lining the roadway. The surface changes considerably along the route, transitioning between maintained light-colored gravel, native dirt, scattered loose rock, and lightly vegetated two-track. The roadway is generally only one vehicle wide, with limited areas available to pull aside for opposing traffic. Several portions pass beneath a dense forest canopy, while more open sections allow thicker grasses and other vegetation to grow along the shoulders. Low areas and depressions can retain standing water well after rainfall. A large, deep mud hole is the primary obstacle along the route, that can easily swallow a 40-inch-tall tire. The bottom of this mud hole is very soft and makes getting or keeping traction very difficult, although an established bypass allows vehicles to travel around it. Wildlife may frequently cross the roadway, and fallen trees or branches are possible throughout the wooded sections.

Difficulty

The large, deep mud hole is the primary obstacle and can create significant traction issues, although a bypass is available. Typical whoops, dips, ruts, and loose terrain create additional uneven sections along the route.

History

The Mount Magazine area has a long history of transportation, forestry and recreation. During the Great Depression, federal programs including the Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration developed roads and recreation infrastructure around the mountain. Cove Lake was constructed as part of the Mount Magazine land-use project and was completed in 1938, while CCC crews based at nearby Blue Mountain performed forestry work and improved roads throughout the area. Many of today's routes travel through the same national forest landscape that was extensively managed and developed during this period.
