WhoopDeDo Roller Coaster is an exhilarating 21-mile desert trek designed for experienced four-wheel-drive drivers seeking scenic ridgelines, steep climbs, and a roller-coaster-style ride through Arizona’s rugged Mineral Mountains. Branching off State Route 79 near Florence, this route serves as a lesser-known gateway into the vast network of trails north of Box Canyon. The initial segment features a mild and highly scenic drive lined with towering saguaro cacti, offering panoramic mountain views before dropping into a maze of canyons and washes. As the trail advances, the terrain becomes increasingly complex and challenging, testing both vehicle capability and driver confidence over highly uneven, rugged ground.
Rated as a technical difficulty of 6, the trail demands high clearance and low-range capability to navigate deep ruts, off-camber sections, and loose rock climbs with obstacles up to 3 feet tall, including ledges and short, steep grades. Drivers will experience a cumulative elevation gain of over 3,800 feet, peaking at an elevation of 2,978 feet above sea level as they climb up and down ridges and weave through sandy washes that may hold deep water after heavy rains. The defining highlight of this route is the legendary Roller Coaster section near the end, where a succession of steep, rapid descents and climbs delivers a thrilling finish. Access Description
No permits are specifically required to drive the trail, but an Arizona State Land Department (ASLD) recreation permit is required if staging, parking, or crossing adjacent state trust lands. Drivers should avoid the route during or immediately following heavy rainstorms, as the deep sandy washes are prone to rapid flash flooding. High-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles or capable SxSs are highly recommended due to the technical rating.
