Twin Submarines

Twin Submarines is a scenic and challenging 1.5-mile trail designed for intermediate offroaders seeking to explore unique desert rock formations and rugged terrain. Serving as an excellent continuation of the nearby Shiprock trail, this route guides four-wheel-drive vehicles and SxSs past two distinct geological features that rise dramatically from the Arizona desert landscape near the Santa Maria River. The path winds through elevation ranges between 1,690 and 1,880 feet, featuring an overall elevation gain of approximately 260 feet. Along the way, attentive drivers can spot a natural spring bubbling up in the wash below, which sometimes feeds a small stream in the main wash after seasonal rains. With a technical rating of 6, the route presents demanding obstacles including steep, loose hill climbs, deep washouts, off-camber sections, and short rock shelves that require careful tire placement. Deep, soft sand outside of the wet spring areas can easily trap unprepared rigs, making it necessary to air down tires before proceeding. An Arizona State Land Trust permit is required for entry, day use, and overnight dispersed camping at the primitive spots along the trail. Cellular service is unavailable throughout this remote canyon, making self-recovery gear and off-grid navigation tools essential for a safe trip.
