Trail Overview

Sunkist is an approachable seven-mile desert trail on the east side of Quartzsite, Arizona, ideal for beginner offroaders, SxSs, and high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles looking to connect to a wider network of trails. This connector route provides crucial access north and south across the valley, linking drivers to Plomosa Road, the Painted Mountains, and trails heading toward Bouse or deeper mountain ranges. The terrain is primarily unpaved, dusty, and characterized by typical desert flats, making it a straightforward drive under dry conditions. Along the way, travelers can enjoy vast desert views of distant mountain ranges and classic desert vegetation like saguaros and other cacti. Starting near Plymouth Road just east of Highway 95 (Central Boulevard), the route climbs gently from an elevation of 894 feet up to 1,072 feet, with a modest cumulative elevation gain of around 192 feet. While generally easy, the trail can feature very rough, rocky, and heavily eroded sections, especially where it crosses dry washes. Monsoon storms and heavy seasonal rains regularly cause washouts and change the trail's condition, requiring drivers to watch for sudden drops and new debris. Wildlife sightings are common, with desert quail and coyotes frequently spotted near the track. If traveling after recent rainfall, drivers will be treated to colorful displays of blooming cacti.
