Trail Overview
SS1167 is a north-south trail that runs along the outskirts of the Peloncillo Mountains Wilderness Area. Stay on the designated trail; the wilderness area is to the west and is closed to motorized travel.
The northern section follows a rocky wash with a few narrow areas and several small rock gardens to climb through. 4WD and high clearance are necessary. The trail can become impassable when wet and is in a flash-flood area. The north section ends at private property. The southern section begins across SS1149 and slightly west. This portion is a wide gravel two-track with several wash crossings and a few washed-out climb-outs. It's bumpy but straightforward, with no technical obstacles found. This section makes a great connector for accessing other trails south. These sections offer beautiful views of the rock formations and canyons surrounding the Peloncillo Mountains Wilderness.
History
These mountains have been traveled for thousands of years—from prehistoric communities and Native American travel routes to stagecoaches crossing the Southwest. Old archaeological sites and the historic Butterfield Stage Route are reminders that you're driving beside a landscape with a much older story. In 1990, nearly 20,000 acres were permanently protected as the Peloncillo Mountains Wilderness
