Trail Overview

This easy, graded gravel road takes you on a beeline through a checkerboard of Arizona Trust Land and Babbitt Ranch lands on your way to the historic and amazingly preserved Aso Ranch. Along the way, you'll have your head on a swivel taking in the sweeping views of the San Francisco Mountains to your south and Painted Desert to the North. Note: you are passing through Arizona Trust Land, which requires a recreational use permit that can be purchased online for $15 and is good for 1 year.

Difficulty

There are no obstacles on this road. However, you are on the hot and dry side of the San Francisco mountains. Take water, download offline maps, and let someone know where you're going.

History

Geology buffs, volcano lovers, and lovers of old West and Native American history will love this area, as it is teeming with history. Zoom out on the maps and you'll see that you are driving among ancient volcanic vents and craters. Keep your eyes open for antelope, too!
