Trail Overview

Round Mountain Lookout is a short, scenic out-and-back climb designed for offroaders seeking a quick challenge with rewardingly panoramic vistas from the summit of Round Mountain in the Kaibab National Forest. Spanning approximately 0.8 miles, this trail ascends about 375 feet, taking drivers from a starting elevation of 6,842 feet to the mountain's crest at 7,217 feet. Suitable for high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, ATVs, and SxSs, the route demands careful tire placement due to its steep, rocky terrain and off-camber sections. Scattered boulders and small ledge obstacles are present along the trail, testing both driver capability and vehicle clearance. With a technical rating of 4, the track features tight switchbacks that make it unsuitable for full-size rigs. The dirt and rock surface can become slick and muddy when wet, and there is no winter maintenance, meaning snow and ice will make the climb impassable during the colder months. Cell service is extremely limited along the route, with only a single bar of reception occasionally available at the summit. This side trip branches off Gobbler Spring Road (Forest Road 147) and provides a memorable, high-elevation excursion for those already exploring the Williams area trail network.
