Trail Overview

A bucket list camping destination! This out-and-back trail on the north rim of the Grand Canyon takes you to Point Sublime dispersed camping area with 360 views of the canyon. The trail passes through a deep forest along the rim. It is moderately difficult and most likely impassable when wet/snowy. This route is just one way to get there. There are multiple routes you can explore. You will pass by multiple dispersed camping spots and fire lookout towers along the way. The best part - it's very unlikely you will see another group of people here. It's very remote so be prepared. A permit is required to camp.

Slow going narrow road. Not hard but you need high clearance.

Several large deadfalls were cleared within the last couple of days. In all we drove 25 mikes in 3 hrs while towing a Hiker trailer to Pt Sublime.

I drove in on the southern route. I had to clear a few downed trees. Small enough I picked them up by hand. I don’t suggest anyone without a lifted 4WD drive in on this road. You will get stuck and or destroy your vehicle. I drove out on the northern route. That was easy enough for a normal SUV.

This portion was a piece of cake relative to the south entrance. Was able to maintain about 13.2 MPH for the whole trail.

Access via Widforss Rd features moderately difficult terrain with deep ruts, washouts and steep grades. However access from Forest Rd 22 is easier terrain primarily featuring washboard gravel roads with a few steep grades and narrow sections.

Trail is about 2 hours one way. I have had people tell me they have made it in 2WD SUVs but I wouldn't attempt it. Trail is not too rough in normal conditions but there are 3 or 4 sand washes that would just become mud pits after a good rain. Some tight squeezes between trees that would be difficult for larger vehicles, but passable.
