Trail Overview
Old 305a, also known as Forest Road 305a, is an easy 8.4-mile trail perfect for beginners, scenic cruisers, and those looking to explore the Kaibab National Forest area just south of the Grand Canyon. Starting from Highway 64, the route quickly transitions from a wide gravel road into a rough, rocky, single-lane dirt two-track that winds through a beautiful forest of ponderosa pines. With a maximum elevation of 6,949 feet and a mild elevation gain of around 710 feet, the terrain presents gentle climbs and descents suitable for most high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, and dirt bikes.
As the trail heads north towards Red Skinner Road, it passes through wildfire burn scars and areas with downed pines, which may require navigating established bypasses. Drivers should remain alert for grazing cattle along the northern stretch of the route, where the path eventually terminates at the wider, well-maintained Forest Service Road 302. Its proximity to Red Butte, a prominent local geological landmark rising to 7,324 feet just south of the trailhead, makes this a great connector route for scenic day trips or as a gateway to further off-highway exploration in the region.
History
This trail is located near the historic Red Butte Airfield, which played a key role in early Grand Canyon aviation. Founded in 1927 as Scenic Airways (later Grand Canyon Airlines), it is recognized as one of the oldest continuous air tour operations. In 1956, Grand Canyon Airlines pilots operating from this area were the first to locate the wreckage of the tragic mid-air collision over the Grand Canyon, an event that directly led to the creation of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Access Description
The trail is located within the Kaibab National Forest. No permits or fees are required to drive the route, but vehicles must be street-legal or possess a valid Arizona OHV decal. Visitors should practice Leave No Trace principles and be mindful of active cattle grazing along the northern portion of the trail.
