Trail Overview

Max Tank Road branches off to the right from the Patagonia Loop, welcoming travelers with sightings of deer herds near its entrance. The trail winds through open grasslands, where signs of cattle are evident, though few are typically seen along the route. As the journey unfolds, the road splits, requiring drivers to take the less-traveled path. This unmaintained trail sees little use, with only faint remnants of its original route guiding the way. It follows a ridge with occasional valleys cutting through the landscape. Despite its appeal, the trail eventually dead-ends, with no access to the forest road as indicated on some maps. A fence, seemingly placed by a local farmer, now blocks the connection. Signs of past wild camping are visible, marked by an old fire patch, though caution is advised due to the surrounding grasslands. The risk of fire is high, making it essential for visitors to be mindful of their impact on the area. The trail lacks amenities such as established dispersed camping, trash disposal, and water supply, and there is limited cell service.
