Trail Overview
Hutch Mountain Lookout is an easy, scenic dirt road perfect for families, beginners, and offroaders looking for a relaxed drive with stunning panoramic views of northern Arizona. Starting directly off Lake Mary Road, also known as Forest Highway 3, this well-maintained route winds through dense ponderosa pine forests, mixed conifers, and beautiful aspen groves. The trail follows Forest Service Road 135, offering a smooth and accessible path that climbs steadily up the mountain and provides a cool retreat from the desert heat during the warmer months. It is suitable for most stock SUVs, high-clearance vehicles, and SxSs, making it an excellent introduction to forest driving.
At the summit, the historic and active Hutch Mountain fire lookout tower serves as the main highlight, where visitors can climb to the upper platform for sweeping vistas of Mormon Lake, the San Francisco Peaks, and the Mogollon Rim. While the route is generally dry and straightforward, summer monsoons can quickly turn the dirt into slick mud, requiring extra caution or four-wheel-drive capability. The road is typically open from late spring to autumn but remains closed in winter due to snow accumulation. Excellent dispersed camping spots can be found along the surrounding forest roads, making this a perfect weekend getaway.
