Trail Overview

Gunsight Tank Trail is a 2-mile out-and-back (4-mile round trip) trail rated 3 of 10 located in Arizona's Coconino County. The trail is one of many side trails that stretch across the plateau from Gunsight Road the primary north-south trail. Extending west from Gunsight Road the trail crosses through high desert scrub with a few Junipers. During the late spring, the plateau will be covered with blooming wildflowers. There is also considerable Mormon Tea and other flowering plants in this area. The trail is a single-vehicle-wide track comprised mostly of packed dirt and embedded rock. There will be some sand as the trail crosses small drainages. At the end of the trail are some great views of the Kanab Creek Wilderness Area and the confluence where Snake Gulch spills into the creek. There are also views across to the west and to the north toward Zion. This trail ends in Arizona State Trust Land. By law, you are allowed to travel through trust lands without stopping. However, if you stop for any reason, it is considered recreating and requires a Recreational Land Use permit. See the link below for the permit. Dispersed camping on the rim is allowed with a permit. Gunsight Plateau is quietly tucked away in the Arizona Strip between Fredonia and Lee's Ferry. The plateau is elevated and protrudes south giving amazing views of the canyons below. This area is accessible year-round and is not subject to the October to May closures of the Grand Canyon's north rim. The area does get very hot in the summer. This is a remote area where the likelihood of seeing other people is very low. There is no cell service away from Fredonia. Food and fuel can be found in Fredonia or a little further north in Kanab, Utah.
