Trail Overview
It is a scenic mountain trail that winds through a dense forest of tall pine trees, offering a peaceful escape and a steady climb with excellent visibility of the surrounding landscape. The route follows a winding dirt road that climbs nearly 400 feet, gradually opening up to distant mountain views that become more expansive as you gain elevation. The trail surface varies between hard-packed dirt, rocky patches, and occasional ruts--with several off-camber sections and a few small drop-offs along the way. After rain, the dirt can quickly turn to mud, making traction more difficult, especially on some steeper or uneven areas. Despite its relatively moderate rating, FS 689D keeps things engaging with light technical features and beautiful high-country scenery.
Difficulty
This trail is rated a 2 due to rutted areas, rocky sections, and minor off-camber segments, especially in wet conditions. High clearance is recommended, and 4WD may be necessary if recent rain has turned the dirt to mud. Most experienced drivers will find this trail enjoyable, with just enough challenge to keep things interesting without being too technical. Ideal for intermediate off-roaders seeking a wooded, scenic trail climb.
