FS 1983

Trail Overview

Trail 1983 is a point-to-point trail with several washed-out sections and areas where the trail becomes difficult to follow. Be sure to follow the mapped line closely, as parts of the trail have started to return to nature. The most significant obstacle is located near the intersection with Trail 2047. This section is heavily washed out and will require 4-Low, high clearance, and possibly a spotter. Drivers will need to enter the wash at an angle, step down over rocks, and climb out over a short wall (or run it in reverse depending on the direction of travel). This is the most technical washout, but there are several additional washouts along the trail that require careful navigation to stay above or around the eroded areas. There is one additional wash crossing, but it is not technical. Despite the navigation challenges, the obstacles make this a fun and engaging trail. The continuation of this trail south from 2047 has been closed by the Forest Service. A permit is required for the Tonto National Forest and can be purchased online.

Difficulty

This is a very natural trail that can be difficult to follow in places. It features deep ruts, severe washouts, and a major wash crossing that requires careful navigation. Sections are overgrown and may become impassable during poor weather. Expect large rocks, off-camber climbs, and a wall that must be climbed up or down depending on direction.
