Trail Overview

FR 71 starts as a beautiful, wide road that traverses a large meadow. In this meadow, there are several pull-through campsites that could accommodate trailers up to fifth wheels. Out the East side of the meadow, however, the road quickly becomes a single-lane mud track with ruts and off-camber water crossings. Heading uphill you'll skirt Pouquette Hill, and drive through an old burn scar that shows on the bark of the Ponderosa Pines. As you dip back down to lower elevations, large mud puddles encompass the trail, making 4-wheel drive a necessity.

Great beginner trail. Towards the middle of the trail it is single lane and can get very rocky but small shale rock maximum 12 inch high. Beautiful beginner trail. Did not use four-wheel-drive. Large tree roots cross trail very manageable. FYI, the map is not accurate as you loop to the end, the trail dies. Banked to the left on the trail that will take you to an adjacent trail not shown and it will lead you to the final part of your loop. Do not try and cross where the map shows bank to the left.
