Trail Overview
Fh1008 is a side trail off Fh1001 that runs parallel along higher terrain above the desert floor. The route travels through classic Sonoran Desert vegetation, including creosote and prickly pear. The trail is smooth, consisting of dirt and gravel, and is generally one vehicle wide. There are a few shelf road sections, but nothing technical. Expect beautiful, elevated views, especially at sunset, with clear sightlines toward McKinney Mountain and China Peak to the east. And the highlight of this trail is the view of Steer Springs Canyon. From what we can tell, this is the highest view of the canyon. Fh1008 connects to FH1001 at both ends, making it an easy loop option. There are no known spur trails along this route. This is an easy, scenic trail suitable for 2WD vehicles and above in dry conditions. Some sections are slightly overgrown and may result in minor pinstriping.
History
Steer Canyon's history is marked by hoof prints and weathered rock. Motorized travel is prohibited. This is a habitat for desert bighorn sheep and saguaro cactus. True backcountry solitude. Volcanic cliffs and steep desert terrain. Ranchers grazed cattle in the surrounding valleys and pushed stock into the canyon country. The name reflects the cattle ranching period that shaped much of Southeastern Arizona.
