Trail Overview

Edge of the World (FS RD 231) is a wonderfully scenic, and easy, a route traversing through AZ State Trust land and Coconino National Forest leaving Flagstaff and heading South toward the East Pocket Lookout. Start your adventure through the Ponderosa pines by passing a couple of parks en route to Rogers Lake, a seasonal lake bed, where one can stop and hike the Two Spot Trail. As you continue South, there are many other forest service roads that can be accessed and dozens of dispersed campsites along the way leading to multiple days of exploring if time permits. The last portion of the trail, heading East toward East Pocket Knob, borders the Red Rock Secret Mountain Wilderness to the South. This area provides a stunning overlook of Sedona and the red rocks in the distance and also provides some of the most scenic dispersed campsites in the area. Plan accordingly as these spots fill up quickly. Driving through State Trust land is permitted, however, if you wish to stop or camp on State Trust land a permit is required. As always, be a steward of our public lands and national forests;observe Tread Lightly! principles and have fun.

Easy trail, took about an hour and a half from start to finish. Passed a few cars along the way. Rocky and very bumpy from time to time but was easy to navigate.

Road up is super bumpy, some large rocks and loose gravel. Airing down is a must on a 4x4 w large wheels or else you are in for bumpy ride. Gorgeous views along the way and worth the ride. Busy campsite with a lot of cars trying to camp out. Would recommend arriving earlier than noon if you plan to camp.

Easy trail, great ride through the woods and some wide open areas too. 4 wheel drive was not necessary other than a few muddy areas. Very scenic.

Evening run on the trail to catch the sunset. Trail starts off smooth then gets rugged and rough. The last mile of the trail is closed. Over all an awesome trail with an amazing view

Trail was in good shape, some muddy puddles, but nothing technical. High clearance needed in a few sections, but that's about it. Spent the night with the family and the views are amazing! However, sad to see A LOT of trash left behind around the campsites. Please clean after yourself and take your trash with you. Beautiful trail and camp otherwise. Locked gate on the last section before the lookout tower

Trail conditions were good until we hit the closed and lock the gate. The gate may have been temporarily closed due to heavy snow conditions in the area.

All roads are open into Edge of the World trail. The route from the 89A on the 535 was very muddy and we almost got stuck in a few portions. Definitely recommend the 231 route from flagstaff unless you have a crew, winch, or confident with recovery tools. Make sure you use google and coordinates to find the spot as this pin is not accurate.

Muddy, some ice. Drove in on 2/26 and left the following morning. Stock 2024 Subaru Crosstrek sport. Took it slow, 15mph most of the way, 25 in spots, 5 in others. Slid around on the mud a few times. Awesome fun trip for my first off road experiences with my new Crosstrek.

The trail starts off a bit rocky, we aired down about half a mile in, there are spots where you can pull off into a campsite and handle all of your pre-ride business. There are some ruts, washboards and rocky sections but for the most part, the roads are well defined easy for anything with clearance. We saw lots of campgrounds in use and passed other rigs quite a bit without issue. Bring some chairs and some lunch and enjoy some time with a great view. We accessed it from 89 and the intersecting County Road to get to the Forrest road. Easy to find.

Trail was rougher than expected (first time). Passed many vehicles and pretty much entire road is wide enough for two vehicles. Sides of road in areas are starting to mud up as snow is beginning to fall.

We went up to the southeast end of the Edge of the Trail from Backward Tank Trail. We backtracked and got the amazing vista photos at a couple of the campsites instead of hiking to the end of the trail on foot. The map shows where we stopped near Pine Tank. Afterwards we took Edge of the World all the way up to Flagstaff. Much more pronounced washboard conditions and lots of small/medium potholes in the road north of the Backward Tank Trail. Near the end we had a lot more traffic coming south from Flagstaff driving pretty fast 35 mph and kicking up rocks.

Edge of the World Trail can be accessed by the following ride types:

  • Single Track
  • 50 Inch
  • 60 Inch
  • High Clearance
  • Full Width
