Trail Overview

Diablo Pass is a rugged 11.9-mile point-to-point trail in the Dome Rock Mountains just west of Quartzsite, Arizona, offering intermediate offroaders a scenic journey through classic desert terrain. This route is ideal for drivers looking to escape the crowded desert flats and test their skills on a mix of loose rock, sand washes, and eroded dirt tracks. Rising from a minimum elevation of 678 feet to a peak of 1,282 feet, the trail winds past Middle Camp Mountain and Oldman Mountain, climbing over ridges that provide stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Sonoran Desert. The route features a variety of natural obstacles, including ruts, moderate ledges up to two feet high, and short, steep pitches. Four-wheel drive is highly recommended, as the trail's terrain can change quickly with seasonal rains that wash out sections and leave behind deep ruts, loose rocks, and potential mud holes or water crossings up to 18 inches deep in the washes. While much of the route is straightforward, a loop over a low ridge on the western edge of the trail offers a more technical challenge and serves as the scenic highlight of the run. Easily accessible from Interstate 10, Diablo Pass makes for a perfect half-day adventure during the cooler fall, winter, and spring months when desert temperatures are mild.
