Trail Overview
Box Canyon at Hassayampa River is a scenic, beginner-friendly route near Wickenburg, Arizona, that treats offroaders to a unique journey through a dramatic red-rock canyon. This 4.5-mile trail is highly accessible, making it an excellent choice for stock high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, and ATVs looking for a fun day on the sand. The trail winds along the sandy bed of the Hassayampa River, where the towering canyon walls provide welcomed shade and stunning desert vistas. While the riverbed is dry or shallow most of the year, drivers should be prepared for deep, soft sand that requires airing down tires to maintain traction. Staying in existing tracks helps prevent sinking, particularly through the softer sections. Because the path relies heavily on the active river corridor, conditions can shift rapidly, and drivers must remain vigilant of weather reports due to flash flood risks in the narrow canyon segments.
Rising gently from an elevation of 2,177 feet to a maximum of 2,298 feet, this route features minimal elevation change with only about 187 feet of cumulative gain. The staging area off Rincon Road, just a short drive from the roundabout at Highways 60 and 93, offers ample space for parking trailers and prepping rigs. Beyond the main sandy canyon floor, several offshoot trails branch into the surrounding hills, offering more technical challenges for ATVs and SxSs. Stock SUVs can easily handle the main run, but keeping momentum in the deeper sand and watching for occasional wet or muddy crossings is key to enjoying this iconic desert canyon run.
