Trail Overview
Beale's Wagon Road is a wide and smooth road with no obstacles on it. It runs through this section of the Kaibab National Forest's towering Ponderosa Pines. The original road is over 1,000 miles long, stretching from Fort Smith, Arkansas to the Colorado River and beyond. Sections of the original road still exist in this forest, though as a hiking and horseback trail, as motorized travel along the original route is prohibited. This is a smooth and easy trail through a beautiful forest.
History
Beale Wagon Road is an historic trail that originally stretched for 1240 miles, from Ft. Smith, Arkansas to the Colorado River. The road was charted by Edward Fitzgerald Beale in 1857. Segments of this trail cross the Kaibab National Forest totaling 23 miles, and are open for hiking and horseback riding. Travel by motorized vehicle is strictly prohibited except where current forest roads exist in its place.
