Trail Overview

Alamo Spring is a moderately challenging offroad trail in the Coronado National Forest near Tucson, offering high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles and SxSs an engaging route through the rugged Santa Catalina Mountains. Winding through the scenic desert landscape east of Tucson near Redington Pass, this trail features uneven and rutted dirt terrain littered with loose rocks, sand, erosion, and deep washes. Drivers should expect to navigate obstacles up to 18 inches in height, including rocky ledges and short, steep grades. The route is typically one vehicle wide with limited places to pass, making careful wheel placement and driver focus essential throughout the journey. Weather heavily influences the trail conditions, with winter and spring bringing snowmelt and rain that can create deep mud holes and water crossings up to a foot deep. During these wetter months, the creek and river bottoms can wash out, making the trail route almost impossible to locate and requiring GPS maps for navigation as cell service is unavailable. Summer and fall offer significantly drier and easier conditions, though offroaders should always carry recovery gear, including a winch, as well as extra food and water. The surrounding area near Piety Hill and Guthrie Mountain provides stunning views of the desert and rugged peaks, making it a highly rewarding route for experienced drivers looking to explore Arizona's backcountry.
