Trail Overview

This is one of the longer trails through the Red Spring Pass trail system. The entire route is moderate difficulty, with frequent short climbs and descents that are full of loose baby head-sized rocks. Expect ruts, steep spots, and moderate rock obstacles. The south end of the trail is more gradual and easier, as the trail winds through rocky ravines and washes and over rolling desert hilltops. There are bigger velvet mesquite trees lower in the washes providing some shade, but more sun exposure as it climbs north. It crosses several sandy washes, but the trail is well defined and easy to follow as it enters and exits the wash. There are a few signs from the locals that maintain the trails - the lower half is referred to as "John's Trail", while the northern half is known as the "Goat Trail." The northern half of the trail is steeper and becomes more difficult and even rockier. Some of the climbs become more demanding and tiring as the loose rock surface is relentless. It has some steeper switchbacks, deeper ruts, and short rock ledges. Near the intersection with 484, the trail rides past a big pond - Coyote Tank, riding on a little ridge elevated above the water. The last section between 484 and 482 is the rockiest and most difficult.

Access Description

There is an official staging area for the Red Spring Pass dirt bike trails four miles into Sardina Canyon Road (684). Enter Sardina Canyon at the Hunter Access Point from the Interstate 19 Frontage Road (exit the highway at Chavez Siding Road). The staging area is a large dirt parking lot with space for several vehicles and small trailers. There is a map and information kiosk, and two picnic tables. Overnight camping is not allowed in this lot; however, there are numerous dispersed camping spots along Sardina Canyon Road. The road in is very slow going and bumpy, with lots of loose rock and ruts, ideal mostly for high clearance 4x4 vehicles. This area gets used for illegal immigration - use caution and expect to see border patrol in the area.
