Trail Overview

This mile-long dirt bike trail has several big climbs that are very steep and loose and will be tricky for some riders. It goes along a ridge line, past beautiful saguaros, with great views of the mountains the whole time. The climbs are full of loose rocks and ruts, and some of them have embedded rock layers making ledges less than a foot tall. The trail stays wide the whole time like a two-track. It descends down into a wash that is made of sand and small rocks. It follows the wash for a minute, with quick snaking curves, and is lined with cool rock walls. There is a washed-out exit from the wash on the north side of the wash that is super easy to miss. It looks like most riders miss the exit from the wash, so there aren't many tracks for the rest of the trail, and it's harder to follow, but only for a small segment. It meets up with a wider road on the north end. Since this trail is partially on Arizona State Trust Land, it requires a recreation permit that you can obtain online.

Difficulty

This trail is intermediate difficulty due to steep and loose hill climbs that will require some hill climbing experience. It also will require some route finding when it exits the wash.

Access Description

To access the Boulders OHV Area, take North Picacho Wash Road north from the West Carefree Highway. There is a huge staging area a mile up North Picacho Wash Road, with one pit toilet, a couple of picnic tables, and about 20 nice dispersed campsites for big rigs. There's a youth training area as well that is a fenced-off area for young or new riders to practice without cars nearby. This riding area gets very crowded on weekends. Most of the trails are unmarked, so a GPS map is extremely helpful here. Look out for wild burros.
