Trail Overview
This incredible trail starts in a deep valley before climbing to run parallel to the Canwell Glacier along a steep bank of rocky moraine. While the drive is not difficult, it will require high clearance and a good tolerance for heights! There are drop-offs on either side of the narrow trail, with the scree-covered glacier hundreds of feet below, but it is wide enough for a full-size truck or SUV.
Difficulty
The new trail difficulty designation is due to a cliff edge at the top of the moraine, less than a mile from the end of the trail, once you reach the top of the rock fall and switchbacks, and get to the iron-heavy rock deposit closer to the upper emergency hut. The path is wide enough for a vehicle to cross easily; however, if the driver goes too far to the cliff side, they run the risk of rolling their vehicle off the mountain, resulting in total vehicle loss and risk of serious injury. Vehicles with than standard should avoid the upper section of the trail without scouting.
