Trail Overview

US Forest Service Road 724 in the Oakmulgee division of the Talladega National Forest offers stunning forest views, ample wildlife viewing opportunities, and exciting trail riding experiences. There are several excellent dispersed camping spots along the course of the road. Both the East and West trailheads begin with gravel, but soon turn to dirt. Expect ruts, mud, short steep climbs, and washouts in the heart of the road. Wet conditions will increase the difficulty of this road greatly.

It gets a little fun towards the middle of trail.. aside from that it’s a pretty basic trail.

Trail is in good shape. Need a 4x4 for some of the steep climbs. 2 days post rain and there were a handful of wet spots up to about 12”

Fairly narrow trail (be prepared for a few areas of vegetation to rub up on your car) but much wider on the eastern side of the trail. Not too bad overall, but just when you think this trail gets “boring”, it will surprise you with some deep mud ruts, or some steep-ish inclines. Just enough to keep the whole trail interesting! Went through about 4x fairly decent mud puddles (after a day of heavy rain), but nothing that my stock H3 with All Terrains couldn’t get through. Took me about an hour to get through. For me who is fairly new to off-roading, this was a good way to get your feet wet, and a good way to spend a Monday!

Me and my buddies went after 2 days of rain (2010 jeep, 2015 tacoma, 2003 tundra) the jeep was the only lifted vehicle but it was only 4 inches lifted. no problems on the trail. lots of water holes but none we couldn't get through in 2WD. there was 1 pretty deep hole close to the noth end of the trail but it was easy to get around. near the south end there were 2 pretty steep grades with deep washes but with some spotting we were all able to get down and up it with little issue.

Decent sized tree was down halfway through the trail but chainsaws took care of it.

Saw some wildlife. A few areas where the vegetation has grown up enough you may end up with a few scratches - one deep rut you can bypass. No water today but you can tell where areas hold water.

If you start from the west side you will encounter a downed tree coving the whole road. The tree is about a foot wide and is still attached to the roots which is just off the left side of the trail so even with a winch or tow straps it will be difficult to remove it. Chainsaw is needed and will take approximately half hour give or take to chop it up and clear it.

No rain for several days so dusty in spots, yet some of the deeper ruts held enough water to get me to the normal, happy, muddy state. Pretty views and lots of solitude.
