Trail Overview

Hytop is a scenic, lower-intermediate 5.3-mile off-road trail located within the Skyline Wildlife Management Area in Alabama, perfect for four-wheel-drive vehicles and SxSs seeking a moderate challenge with rewarding views. Best run from east to west, this route begins with a descent into the WMA, where drivers will encounter a fork and a creek crossing that may run dry depending on the season. Beyond the creek, the terrain transitions into a steep, terraced incline that can become exceptionally slick and demanding during wet seasons or when autumn leaves blanket the trail. Negotiating this climb requires careful line selection, but it rewards drivers with a smoother, more even path at the top, surrounded by the lush hardwood forests of the Cumberland Plateau. With an elevation profile ranging from 633 feet to 1,767 feet, the trail features a dramatic 1,250-foot elevation loss and a maximum gradient of over 16 degrees, making for an exciting mountain descent when traveling westward. Roughly halfway through the route, past a scenic switchback, several ledge overlooks provide the perfect setting to park and enjoy a picnic lunch with sweeping views of the surrounding valleys. The primary trail surface consists of dirt, rock, and mud, which requires high-clearance four-wheel-drive capability, especially to manage the slick terraced sections in the fall and winter. The trail eventually exits onto County Road 13, leading directly back to the main highway for an easy return journey.

Less than 1/8th mile down the trail when starting from the east, there was a locked WMA gate.

We drove west to east. It was a bit muddy but pleasant for the fist half. The second half got increasingly technical and adventurous. The elevation change happens on steep trail sections that are washed out. We are in a stock 4Runner ORP. Put it 4Low with locker and took it slow. This would have been much more difficult east to west unless its dry.

Trail was open at the west end for logging trucks. The east end has a gate across it but you can get around the gate by going left at the gate and dropping into the creek bed, then taking a right once you are in the creek bed, which will take you to the exit beyond the gate. We went west to east (downhill). Going uphill will be much harder, especially in the wet. Mud and loose gravel and rock. Pretty drive through shaded forest. Driving a 96 3x locked Landcruiser on 35s.

We entered from the skyline side where we experienced really bad road conditions due to active logging. After we went around the hairpin turn around the halfway point going down the mountain conditions got increasingly worse. There were huge washes in between the terraces with sharp rocks and deep loose gravel. Had we been going up the mountain it would have been impassable. I recommend a highly experienced rider only go on this trail. Still had a great time just use caution!
