Trail Overview
Trail 503 is a one-way loop trail beginning on the northwest side of Landing Zone 6 and returning to the same location. When entering the trail, stay on the right side to follow the correct path. This scenic trail weaves through wooded terrain and runs along a ridge, where switchback connects to 503 and numerous water crossings--some of which can be deep depending on recent rainfall. Most of the trail consists of hard-packed dirt with occasional rocky sections. Along the route, multiple trails intersect with 503, so it's important to follow signage carefully, as many of these are one-way trails. The trail also passes through Landing Zone 7, a convenient spot to stop and rest. Near Landing Zone 7, Trail 503 splits. Continuing straight will return you to Landing Zone 6, completing the loop. Taking the right split leads to Trail 503A, which connects to Trail 507. Near the end of the trail, there is a large deep water/mud pit that should be avoided.
Difficulty
Trail 503 is rated as a Level 5 due to its combination of challenging features. The frequent water crossings, some of which can be deep after rainfall, require caution and skill to navigate. The intersections with other one-way trails necessitate careful attention to navigation. These factors, along with occasional rocky sections, elevate the difficulty to a moderate level suitable for experienced drivers and well-equipped 4x4 vehicles. The hole at the end of the trail is very deep and very soft mud. Avoid this hole and take the bypass.
