Trail Overview

This is a pretty mellow 2-track road leading to the top of Tecate Peak. The lower part of the trail is a grave road. If there has been a lot of rain, expect ruts! There are some small rocks and chunky sections but nothing really difficult. There are some tight switchbacks to negotiate and you can expect some exposure and steep drop-offs. But the views at the top are worth it!

Difficulty

It's an easy road overall, but the steep drop-offs and potential for loose rock and ruts mean you need to pay attention.

Trail was a nice ride up, it was very quiet as far as other folks traveling only a UTV group that was up doing their own thing and another person when I was driving down from the peak. The overall road is dirt with some gravel. There are some spots that are have some erosion occurring due to the previous rains and have created some holes that you want to be careful when driving into/through. The travel up is pretty easy just watch you speed and be mindful if others are on the trail as it is very tight in spots so you may need to back up to give way. Going down from the peak you'll want to watch you speed on the switchbacks as they can be sharp!

First two miles of the trail are a private road and on private land. We were met by a land owner and not allowed to go thru.

Pretty straight forward with plenty of opportunities to pass. The only people I ran into were a couple of boarder patrol agents (one in an SUV, one on an ATV). The trail runs along mountain edge the entire way up but is plenty wide. Some loose rock 8-12” at most, but relatively well driven. There’s a chair and some workout equipment at the top if you’re feeling the need for a quick pump when you get there!
