Trail Overview
This trail begins with updated access: earlier reports of low-hanging overhead signs forcing larger vehicles onto dirt roads are outdated, as the signs have been removed. You can now take the paved road directly to the trailhead. Upon arrival, the route immediately climbs 40 feet to the top of the dunes, offering stunning ocean views for the first few miles. Along this stretch, you'll find several pullouts, often occupied by vans and overland vehicles camping for the day or night. A larger dune area along the way becomes a hub of activity on weekends, sometimes hosting 20 to 30 vehicles. Beyond this point, the road becomes significantly washboarded, and as the peninsula widens, the views become less dramatic. The trail ends at a gated security checkpoint, where access beyond requires a QR code obtained from Paraiso del Mar, a local realtor or the restaurant at the peninsula's end. Alternatively, the peninsula can be reached from La Paz via ferry, which many consider a more enjoyable option than enduring the heavily washboarded road.
Difficulty
This road is accessible to any 2WD vehicle; however, caution is advised. Numerous side roads and parking areas branch off the main route, often leading to enticing camping spots and beach access. These areas frequently contain deep sand, where vehicles--even those with 4WD--get stuck daily.
